Back pain and disc injuries

If you are suffering from low back pain, we can help. Dr. Toomey uses several techniques to ease your pain and get you back to your regular activities as quickly as possible.

Gentle care that takes pressure off the discs

One of the main techniques Dr. Toomey uses is flexion-distraction, a gentle way of decompressing the spine. It increases the space between the vertebrae for the discs and brings the joints back to their normal range of motion.

Flexion-distraction is a well-documented, non-surgical method for taking pressure off spinal nerves. It is used for low back pain from joint injuries and for disc problems such as herniated or bulging discs and degenerative disc changes. It supports the spine’s own healing while keeping pain to a minimum, and it can be used for the neck as well.

What we treat

  • Low back pain, recent or long-standing
  • Sciatica
  • Bulging and herniated discs
  • Degenerative disc changes
  • Joint injuries in the low back
  • Pain after back surgery (failed back surgery)
  • Disc problems in the neck

How Dr. Toomey treats it

  • Flexion-distraction and decompression of the spine
  • Spinal manipulation (adjustments), using several techniques
  • Stabilization exercises that strengthen injured soft tissues and lower the risk of injuring your back again
  • A plan for you: care is tailored to what you need to get back to

Whether your back pain is new or has been with you for years, the aim is the same: relief, your mobility back, and your daily activities without pain.

A patient’s story

Dr. Toomey has been my chiropractor for eight years and I highly recommend him. About four years ago I encountered a bulging disc in my spinal area. For the entire summer I was treated by Dr. Toomey three times a week with follow-up exercises that I did at home. I have been pain free ever since. I still make monthly visits to his office.
